How to Beat Depression - Focus On The Problem

Many depression symptoms set in after some negative event (or events) in our lives. Or, they rare up when we encounter a set back to our family life, our career, or other things in our lives that we love or give us pleasure. Depression is often contagious in nature as well. By that, I mean, if you are constantly around depressed people or in a depressive environment, it's easier to become depressed yourself.
Given these common characteristics above, the obvious advice here is to confront these problems (that cause depression) in our lives head-on. If we can effectively address and handle these typical causes of depression in our lives, perhaps we can shake the depression and lift our spirits.
Facing a specific disappointing event in our life directly is often very challenging. Many respond to tragic events within their lives by bottling it up and trying to just be strong and get through it - to suck it up. While being strong and having a desire to carry on through adversity are very admirable qualities in a person, they aren't always the most beneficial with regards to dealing with depressive events.
The truth is, we all need help - especially for those really impactful events within our lives which are exceptionally difficult to overcome and frequently throw us into depression - loss of a loved one, mental or physical abuse, rejection, lost job, addiction, or any type of personal failure. Sometimes facing these obstacles in our lives merely means admitting to ourselves that we need help to make it through them.
Talk to a friend, a family member, a pastor, turn to God - anybody that you can depend on. Talking through your feelings is generally the best medicine and typically serves as a very big initial step towards healing.
Depending on the negative event or cause of your depression, perhaps talking about it is just the start, and what you really need to do is choose to take action. To right the wrong. To beat the addiction. To improve your viability in the workforce and revive your career. To be a better husband or a better wife. To beat the depression. To choose to be happy. There are plenty of ways to better yourself as a human being and to tackle obstacles in your life that might be holding you down. The bottom line is that the world is not fair, but we can choose to not be complacent about our lot in life and do everything in our power to affect positive change for ourselves, our friends, and our families.
To put it simply, don't ride the gutter and wait for somebody else to solve your problems. You have it in you to tackle the problems in your life yourself. Identify the issues that are bringing you down, and seek help where you need it. Invest in yourself or in someone else. Remove yourself from depressive environments, friends, coworkers, or even family members, and focus on beating the things in your life that are bringing you down.
