What Are Typical Signs Of Manic Depression?

An accurate diagnosis of any condition is the first step to treating it, and if you or someone you love may be suffering with manic depression, you need to know for sure right away. The signs of manic depression may vary from individual to individual, but there are many commonalities to watch out for in helping diagnose and eventually address this very problematic condition.
One of the major signs of this condition is an exaggerated sense of elation. Typically, a manic depressive person will have extreme highs that are not realistically justified.
On the same line as over-elation is having grandiose notions, another symptom of manic depression. A person may think their ideas are magnificent, one-of-a-kind creations, when it fact they don't make a lot of sense to others.
Many manic depressives sleep significantly less than what is considered normal. They may be able to function just fine on a few hours or even no sleep, but this is one very self-destructive characteristic of the disease.
Also prevalent in most cases is an unusual amount of irritability. This may be caused by insufficient sleep or racing thoughts, but it presents itself frequently as a symptom and is distinguishable from "normal" irritability by its suddenness and persistence.
Many victims of this disease will be preoccupied with sex or have an unusually high appetite for it. An increased desire for sexual engagement may result from excess energy, frustration and general anxiety prevalent with manic depressives. It's also a temporary escape from the imprisonment of this condition.
People with this disease also seem to have boundless energy. Not only can they go without sleep, but they race from one activity to the next and can often talk a mile a minute. From an onlookers point of view, life is non-stop and in fast-forward.
Another pervasive characteristic is unfortunately, poor judgement. A manic depressive will act irrationally and well out of the social "norm" in many ways. They may perceive their own actions as completely acceptable, despite the fact that others view them as odd or even extreme.
One of the most damaging signs of this type of depression (for the victim) is inappropriate social behavior. Such actions can soon see them ostracized and alone, without really understanding why. They may engage in derelict conversation, abstract humor or loud and embarrassing conduct. Many of the other people in their social circles have no tolerance for the extreme behavior and will abandon them, out of a lack of understanding and fear for their own reputations.
On the very down side of manic depressive disorder is a serious episode of depression. This symptom nearly always accompanies some or all of the aforementioned characteristics and is usually devastating. Depression is difficult for anyone to deal with, but for a manic depressive, it truly looks like the end of the world.
Recognizing the signs and symptoms of this debilitating conditions is not an easy process. It's very painful to watch and really hard to accept, but necessary to begin treatment and eventual healing. There is a light at the end of the tunnel for this disease, it may just seem far out of reach for some time. With therapy and possible prescriptions, normalcy and happiness can be found again.
