Medication Is Not Necessary To Overcome Depression

While many people may take it as a joke, depression is definitely not something that you want to play around with.
The effects of coping with depression without any type of help can be devastating. Many times when left untreated, the effects of depression can lead to self-induced harm on one's self, causing harm to another, or worse.
Suicide is also another problem that needs to be considered when people are dealing with extreme levels of depression.
Overcoming depression without the use of dangerous drugs is very possible. However, in order for it to work, you will need to be proactive in your efforts to defeat this illness.
I personally have dealt with bouts of depression in my own life. I have never taken medication for depression, but there were times in the past when I was very close to being placed on medication.
Why You Should Try To Avoid Taking Medication
The obvious answer is the side effects.
If you've ever taken a moment to listen to the side effects caused by taking depression medication on the commercials you've noticed that the ramifications of take medication can be far and wide.
Some of the meds that are linked to combating depression have even been known to cause birth defects.
Another reason that you may want to avoid being on medication is the fear of dependency. Once you've been on the drugs for a specified amount of time you'll develop a dependency on them.
It will eventually come to the point where you just don't feel like yourself unless you have had your meds. This can also lead to a chemical imbalance in the brain.
If you thought you were depressed before you started the meds, just wait and see how you're going to feel when you do start the meds and then they are taken away from you!
Now not only are you depressed, but you've developed a chemical dependency on the drugs, in other words you now have an addiction.
Beating Depression
Your overall goal with trying to beat depression should be to get rid of it permanently. What's the use of getting on medication and as soon as you're taken off of the meds you immediately feel depressed again.
This is why I'm a firm believer in alternative methods to treating depression. This would be things like counseling, exercise, spirituality, or whatever it takes.
The key here is to find something that helps you overcome depression without having to put dangerous drugs in your body to accomplish this goal.
Depression is no laughing matter. As mentioned, if left untreated, depression has the potential to create a snowball effect in your life and relationships.
