Depression: Know It and Know How to Cope With It

Depression is a form of mental illness that drives people to feel sad in a persistent manner. It is one of the psychological diseases involving serious stress on an individual both men and women, children, teenagers, adults and senior citizens. It involves a sense of sadness, grief, frustration, hopelessness, loss of passion to pursue a meaningful and happy life. Life is felt lonely and empty. Prolonged depression can have devastating implications for the individual. Apart from emotional upset, the individual's physical function and social interaction will be disturbed. Medical and psychotherapeutic treatment and counseling should be given as early as possible to those involved.
Signs of Depression
  1. Sadness, depression, loneliness, prolonged soul emptiness, sleep disorder, sleeping difficulty ( insomnia ) or sleep over
  2. Quick exhaustion, tiredness and drowsiness
  3. Appetite disturbance, loss of appetite or overeating ( without pleasure )
  4. Becoming sensitive, introverted and preferring to isolate themselves
  5. Pessimism, despair
  6. Loss of interest or pleasure for hobbies and other activities that usually bring pleasure
  7. Feeling guilty or blaming themselves for adverse events occur
  8. Feeling life as meaningless ( this does not necessarily imply a desire to commit suicide, but the depressed may deliberately involve himself/herself in life-threatening situations. This causes the patient does not tend to manage himself and let health and personal safety compromised. Thoughts and actions of suicide attempts may also occur in patients if depression is prolonged without help or treatment
  9. Feeling restless and irritable
  10. Lack of concentration, difficulty making decisions
  11. Becoming too dependent on drugs and alcohol
  12. Physical symptoms such as headaches, back pain, joint pain and digestive disorders, nausea and wheezing
Tips For Coping
  1. Get help immediately if one or more of the above symptoms come to awareness. Do not wait until all symptoms occur. It may be more difficult to recover. Meet with a physician, psychotherapist, counselor or those who are able to help.
  2. Always appreciate, love and take care yourself. Help yourself as much as possible to get closer to God, and accept what He has destined for you. The acceptance and sincerity are in fact the healing. God will give the best, as long as you ask Him. There is always a hidden benefit behind whatever happens that you do not know or are unable to understand.
  3. Avoid being alone. Keep in contact with friends and relatives that you can count on. If being alone is really necessary, plentifully do the devotion and remembrance of God.
  4. It is okay to cry to ease your pain and agony. Crying is human nature. What you need to avoid is the cry of mourning. Mourning or lamenting will be heard by your feeling. It can undermine your spirit.
  5. Be strong by reminding yourself of your responsibilities to others such as family, friends, colleagues, and other people who need you. Letting yourself trapped by depression will eventually affect them too.
  6. Read books that can build morale and motivation
  7. Do not blame and punish yourself for the misfortune that occurs.
  8. Get involved in activities that make you feel comfortable and relaxed.
  9. Boost your health by having healthy diets and eating orderly.
Learn gradually to accept the loss of the loved ones. Even though they are not around anymore, you should believe that their love still lives in your heart. Don't let yourself stuck in a prolonged grief and start a new life. Life goes on. The most important person that brings back happiness and joy in your life is no other than yourself.
