Beat Back Depression When You Say Goodbye to Others' Expectations

Throughout history people have recognized the power of words spoken as a curse. They are words that eat at the mind, words that attack a person's will to the point that they cause real physical harm. In our modern world we believe we have grown beyond such things. Yet we still say words, especially to or in front of children, which have the same end result.
We say things like, "too bad she'll never be pretty," or "you'll never be as good an athlete as your brother," or "has she always been fat?". And if you are trying to beat depression, you know these words never go away.
I brought home a report card once that said "not living up to her potential." I was seven years old. Now how much potential a seven year old is supposed to have was never explained to me. Or what kind of potential it was. The grown-ups shook their heads sadly. I might as well have worn a sign, like David Copperfield, only mine would have read "failure." And I never forgot.
What kind of signs do you wear? If you are depressed, chances are that you carry a heavy load of labels people gave you as a child. Plus, when we feel we are a disappointment, we heap ourselves with guilt as well, for letting down the people we love.
Say goodbye to your parents' or family's expectations. Everyone has to face this at some point, even if they are not depressed. But our level of depression is influenced by how much power we gave those expectations, and the people who voiced them.
Talk it out with your parents if you can. If your family relationships are good overall, let them know how you feel. You may find that they gave absolutely no credence to some busy-body's opinion, which you have hung on to for years. You may also learn that your parents never had half the expectations you thought they did, and they are just proud of who you are.
If communicating with your family is difficult, gently let them know that your life choices are your own. You may apologize for their sense of disappointment without taking any responsibility for it.
Sometimes we have to accept that other people will never be happy. When we hear criticism, we don't always know that the person speaking criticizes everything and everybody. If you are just one more imperfect face in their eternally unhappy line of sight, let it go. Send thoughts of kindness to the person speaking the harsh words, and acknowledge how awful it must be to see no good in the world.
Speak words of acceptance to yourself. When you are trying to beat depression you may find it hard to believe good things about yourself. Think back to moments when you made someone else happy, or achieved some goal that mattered to you. Write them down if you need to, and add to the list as you remember more.
Give yourself credit for trying to beat depression, and be thankful. You only need one real fan. Make that person you.

How to Beat Depression During a Life Crisis

Life can be hard enough when things are going smoothly, but if you're dealing with a life crisis like a divorce, death, or other serious hardship, it's even more difficult to beat depression back and keep anxiety at bay. Don't worry, I'm not going to tell you that I know what you're going through or that everything will be fine. Not many like to hear such meaningless (if well-intentioned) words. The truth is that these life-changing events are incredibly difficult to handle. There are some things you can do to learn how to deal with the stress of a life crisis without letting it consume you, though.
  • Keep Up Your Practice
Whatever your normal personal development routine it, keep it up. Whether it's yoga, meditation, or visualization, continue to rely on these tools to keep you physically, mentally, and emotionally healthy. It can be difficult to muster up the energy or motivation to do anything when you feel like your life is crumbling around you, but if you want to beat depression and keep your head above water during this difficult time, you're going to need your personal growth methods now more than ever.
  • Ask for Help
If you've been practicing personal development, then it means you've taking responsibility for your inner space. The longer you've been at it, the stronger and more in control you probably are. That's good news! Be careful not to make the mistake of thinking that you can or should deal with a life crisis on your own. Talk to a counselor, pastor, or spiritual mentor to help you as you're learning how to deal with stress during your personal crisis. Reaching out a hand can make the difference between whether you beat depression or allow it to creep up on you.
  • Seek the Lesson
When faced with a life crisis, many people ask "why me?" Feeling a little self-pity is normal, but the real question you should be asking yourself is "why this?" Although it may be incredibly difficult to see right away, every crisis has a lesson. As you get better with how to deal with stress and depression during the crisis, the closer you'll be to the life lesson you're meant to learn.
When you're in the midst of a crisis, you may feel as if you'll never see your way out. In order to beat depression, though, it's important that you realize that your life will be normal once again. It may be a new normal, but it will be one that you can live with and even learn to enjoy.

Depression and Suicide - How to Prevent Both

Contrary to popular belief medications do not work and as such we need something better. Suicide is not that easy and most who attempt continue to live but with worse stigmas so obviously we are seeking a more caring compassionate loving and enlightened approach. My approach is different and it works.
On that vein let's try this: Kick your toe off the corner of the bed and while hopping around the floor in agony ask of yourself am I hurting or do I think I am. Then as you massage life back into your wee toe think of how you can massage the niggling urge in your brain to sleep or not to sleep. You can easily identify with physical pain but identifying with mental pain is an entirely different matter altogether. Hmmm?
Actually while depressed a stubbed toe could be disastrous especially if it is a prolonged depression and the darkened cave is becoming quite claustrophobic. The fact you are walking around is a good thing so let us work with that for starters.
Prevention is always better than a cure and wearing slippers prevents stubbed toes. So what is the form that could resemble a slipper but works on the brain and emotions? Water actually!
It is scientifically proven that we are not drinking enough water and consequently our brain is under extreme pressure to thrive. Why do we do this to our most important organ? Stupidity is our greatest characteristic, for want of a better word, although irreverent would be an improvement and all because we believe the advertisements promoting unhealthy living and all through the guise of fun to boot. Oh dear it is time to wake up!
In order to wipe away our irreverent behaviours we shall pay absolute attention to our intake of water. Under no circumstances believe that liquids are all inclusive because au contraire water stands alone and is not included under the umbrella of liquids.
Can you drink too much water? Yes of course you can just like you can eat too much crap or drink too much caffeinated drinks or alcohol. Our body is made up of practically 90% water thus it needs refilling daily - with water.
Now that we know water is the first step what else are we to do to assist water and our blood cells but recognise our intake of salt too. Too much is worse than too little so moderation works and remember to apply that to everything in life.
Add four dollops of humour too as frequently as possible throughout the day, otherwise the hospital shall be welcoming you and we do not want that now do we. Do not even think about the coroner, because as much as we all like labels there is one label we can do without; the identity label on on on our big toe. Phew!
Do you want to live in harmony with Universal magic? Yes! Excellent!
There are actually two primary options for preventing depression and suicide and they are lifestyle changes and knowing our spirits purpose. Not whiskey mind you but the Divine Spirit of which we all originated. To imagine that life is separate from spirit is suicidal in and of itself with or without mental adversity; let alone drunkenness.
Hermes, Paracelsus, Pythagoras, Aristotle and especially Culpepper not to mention Buddha, Jesus, Lao Tzu etc. and the most modern of all - the flower essence man - Bach - have all highlighted in no uncertain terms the importance of re-connecting with spirit.
Religions have done such a number on humanity that we are oblivious to the truth and identity of spirit thus we ignore to our peril that which shall save our lives - indefinitely.
Yes there are activities essential to healthy living like these: I) exercise, 2) humour, 3) diet, 4) meditation, 5) music, 6) gardening, 7) outdoor activities and 8) LOVE. But there is one more as essential as these - re-connecting with source.
Oh sure I could say do what this doctor says and do what that doctor says. Take this and take that. Follow this procedure and that procedure. For what? None of them work restoratively and all we have to do is count the statistics on a worldwide basis to know all of them are failing miserably. Worse - they shall continue to do so as long as we remain asleep to spirit.
Let me say this for a moment. All maladies on the world circuit not just depression, bi-polar, schizophrenia, cancer and diabetes, etc. are all manifestations of our delusion that the physical world is all important. Nothing could be further from the truth.
Our perception of the physical world dissolves and everything we think is important dissolves with it as soon as we take our last breath. However we desire to prolong the interval before our last breath takes effect, so please continue living happily.
Every single mystic that ever lived has encouraged us to meditate yet few of us actually follow through with this advice. Meditation is actually as important as breathing because it separates the bullology from truth and thus your life breathes newness perpetually not staleness of repetitive memories.
Depression and suicide are often symptoms of other serious maladies as well as stand-alone maladies. However, through spirit all maladies throughout the globe relative to earth wind fire water spirit and ether shall diminish when we collectively KNOW and Embrace the EXPERIENCE of the TRUTH of our DIVINE connectedness.
Namaste!
Compassion is life lived through Spirit and Love. There is no excuse for judgmentalism regarding any malady especially one which is so isolating as mental illness. Suicide is difficult even for those who succeed because it required humungous courage to aim to live but the trials of life were too much and as such suicide is a way out. please do not blame those who commit suicide but learn from them lives ways of developing a more loving compassionate approach to all maladies especially mental illness. Thank you. Namaste! Tomas may be reached through e-mail - selfesteemawareness@gmail.com

Disease of Your Environment: Depression

Is depression a disease of your environment? Yes, it is indeed a phenomenon which is present because of the external, surrounding factors. There may be many other factors involved but the immediate atmosphere plays a major role. One of the other known reasons for depression is the genetic factor. Even in the genetic case, there has to be some external trigger which leads to the symptoms of depression manifesting. Though depression is a serious mental problem it must not be considered as a personal weakness since it is medically curable.
So is depression a byproduct of our surroundings? The answer to this too is yes because the chance of a person getting low and down in the dumps is extremely high if the individual stays in an environment of negativity. Many studies have proven that if a person wants to be mentally fit and healthy, the environment plays the most important role. A person may become totally negative if they are continuously exposed to a bad environment since their mind will be totally inclined to the negativity and the bad factors. Researchers have shown that anxiety and problems of depression affect a person mainly because of environmental factors. This anxiety can further lead to psychological problems and affect the normal brain functions.
Is Depression a Byproduct of Stress?
Let us examine the various factors which underlie the environmental causes of making a person feel depressed. Today, man's life is completely swamped with various causes of stress and trauma. These play a vital role in making a person feel sick with the disease of depression. While stress has always been known as a cause of indirect depression, the co-relation between stress and depression seems to be extremely complicated. In simple terms, when an individual is exposed to constant stress and pressure, it leads to depression in the long term. The human mind can thrive in an environment of stress to a certain time but after that it starts showing signs of depression. In the case of genetically transmitted depression, stress acts merely as the triggering factor. One can conclude that if a person is living in an environment full of tensions and anxieties, the person will have a natural inclination towards getting afflicted with depression.
Is Depression a Byproduct of Trauma?
Another important factor which needs to be discussed when we speak of depression as a disease is trauma. It is observed that individuals who go through any unfortunate incident of trauma can get depressed. This can also be termed as clinical depression since it is embedded into that persons mind and feelings. We can easily understand that the painful experiences of life are never easy to forget or to let go. The person experiencing trauma always tries to compare or relate everything that happens to the incident which has left such a great impact on his life. In this manner, the individual always keeps remembering by 'association' the pain and anguish suffered and ultimately goes into depression. The trauma factor is extremely dangerous for such individuals since if they are in the recovery process, they can dive deep into trauma even by a single occasion of remembrance or smallest possible associated incident. Therefore, environment again plays an extremely important role as one of the causes behind making a person depressed.
Childhood History's Role in Inducing Depression
The third important environmental factor is related to the patient's childhood. If the person has had a disturbing environment in childhood, he/she is more likely to be affected by the disease of depression. The effect the childhood environment can have on the adulthood of the person is not understood as yet even by psychologists. Some factors involved in childhood which might have negatively impacted the emotional development of the person include being neglected by parents, separation from parents, and child abuse and something that is entirely overlooked by most practitioners is birth trauma. Forceps delivery can have a devastating impact on the baby's skull causing the cranial sutures to lockup. This is an area that requires further research. Kinesiology is a modality that can unlock the cranial sutures that allow free flow of neural energy between the brain hemispheres via in-breath and out-breath flow. These various factors definitely help us conclude that depression is indeed a disease of our environment.

Real Link Between Bad Skin & Depression

For the vast majority of people, bad skin is a major concern in their daily lives, but it is something that has to deal with, something that has to deal with and something that you just try to get by with the best as you can . However, for a growing number of people, bad skin can weigh much heavier on the mind.

A recent study has shown a link between poor skin conditions like acne, eczema and psoriasis and severe depression and even suicidal feelings. This feeling is especially prevalent among teenagers and young adults who feel a huge pressure to be socially accepted, and if the skin condition is ostracized by their peers or who does not believe that this is the case, the result is a growing population youth with fatal cases of depression.

A study by a group of scientists from Toronto showed a clear relationship between skin disorders and adolescents and young adults perceive self. The study showed that a large number of adolescents with skin problems (over 85%) of this group, most had feelings ranging from mild to severe depression.

One thing that most scientists do not expect to find, however, is that it has found that feelings of depression, even those who have suffered these milder forms of the disease, acne and skin. Most experts had estimated that only teenagers who suffer from skin diseases and other debilitating acne were prone to bouts of depression.

And this is not just a study based on the results. A 2006 study in New Zealand found even more surprising results. According to the survey, a surprising 33 percent of all teenagers suffer from acne or other serious suicidal thoughts at one time or another, and more than ten percent of all adolescents with acne have at least attempted suicide because they were convicted ostracism because of its condition.

Physicians participating in the study admitted that many teens feel that their acne was much more serious than the classification according to the scale said it was and I think this has led to the most severe cases of depression and other suicide cases they expected to find.

To say that these figures are alarming, is a drastic understatement. But not only suicidal feelings come from their peers, which could come from teens and young adults normal medications used to treat their skin conditions, too. A popular drug that has been on the market since 1982 has been associated with suicide among people who take it.

The drug Accutane, also known as isotretinoin was associated with 170 cases of suicide and an unknown number of failed attempts. This data, provided by the U.S. Federal Drug Administration can be extremely low, as they are self-reported, and we believe that the vast majority of suicides and suicide attempts are not reported due to the stigma surrounding that attempt or successful.

It is not known how many cases of depression and suicide can be connected directly to skin conditions like acne social ostracism and eczema. Teens and young adults are constantly in the hollows of emotional disorders and suicide rates among adolescents are generally higher than those of adults, anyway, but it's safe to say that the psychological impact of acne and skin young adults and adolescents is much more impact than most people thought .........
